Tuneping in one paragraph
Tuneping keeps a live index of what tens of thousands of internet radio stations are playing and serves it as a JSON API: now playing, play history, track and artist catalogues, charts, wishlist alerts by webhook or stream, and an MCP server for AI agents. It reads the public title line every radio player already shows (ICY metadata, server status pages and HLS ID3 tags) and never records or relays audio. Stations can opt out at any time. Tuneping is made by Victor Antofica, an independent developer in Switzerland, and grew out of his Mac recorder Tapelark.
Facts
- What it is: an API and site at tuneping.com; docs, live status, charts.
- Scale (3 November 2026): about 78,000 stations listed, 58,000 polled, 23,000 sending titles at any moment, close to 290,000 title changes an hour. The status page shows the live figures.
- How: one small request per station every 20 to 60 seconds by TunepingBot, which identifies itself and honours robots.txt and opt-outs. Titles are matched against MusicBrainz.
- What it is not: fingerprinting or certified airplay monitoring. Plays are detected from what stations announce.
- Sources: station directories Radio Browser (CC0) and the Icecast directory; music metadata from MusicBrainz (CC0 core data).
- Price: free tier without a key; Developer €29, Pro €99, Business from €349 a month (plans).
- For AI agents: the MCP server
Tuneping.Mcpis on NuGet and in the official MCP registry ascom.tuneping/mcp. - Made in: Thalwil, Switzerland. Independent, no outside funding.
Who makes it
Victor Antofica
Founder and developer, Thalwil, Switzerland
Victor builds Tuneping on his own: the crawler, the API, the site and the support mailbox. He also makes Tapelark, a Mac app that records radio and streams into a library of your own; Tapelark needed to know what stations were playing, and that index became Tuneping.
